Keeping your SSL Certificate Current

Integrator does not require that you have an SSL certificate on your website, but mPower suggests that you put one in place to provide better security. If you are using the geolocate command, you need to have the SSL in place. Also, many of the Esri products that you use with mPower products, require the certificate.

How do I know if we have a SSL Certificate I place?

If you have a certificate in place your website URL will start with HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) and a padlock icon will appear.

If your URL has HTTP with the S, you do not have a certificate in place. (Not secure)

How to obtain an SSL certificate

Normally your IT department/provider will request and purchase a certificate from a Certificate Issuer (DigiCert, GoDaddy, Entrust, etc. there are many) or add your site to an existing Wildcard Certificate that they purchased previously.

Once you purchase your certificate, you will download a file and the IT department/provider will install the certificate. mPower is available to help with this process or answer any questions that may arise.

SSL certificates expire. Most of mPower’s customer’s certificates expire in one year. The Certificate Authority states that the SSL certificates should have a lifespan of no more than 27 months. With that stated, a few of you may have 2 year certificates.

How do I check to see when my certificate expires?

Most Certificate Issuers start sending out notices 90 days prior to your expiration date. However, if you have an outside vendor for IT or your ISP provider set it up, they may be getting notified instead of you. The be safe and avoid issues with your website, you should check the details of your site’s certificate. To check the details, follow these steps.

Proceed you your website from your browser.

Select the padlock and choose Connection is secure from the popdown.
